After a very long two days, and a very grumpy Terri who had thrown a wobbly because she couldn't find the deodorant in the case the night before, we decided that today's schedule was going to be one event too long. We needed some time out (not least because I now needed to re-pack the suitcases), and there was no way I was missing the Terracotta Army, one of the highlights of the trip. So Art and I decided to play hooky from the evening's Tang Dynasty banquet and show, and do our own thing in th…

Traffic

We needed money – and there was a bank with an ATM just opposite the hotel. 'Easy' - we thought – 'We'll just pop across at the traffic lights after breakfast'. Of course, we'd only seen the road junctions from the relative safety of our bus. And after seeing the way every one of our drivers approached junctions, we should have known better. Bottom line – traffic lights, pedestrian crossings and little green 'cross now' men mean very little – if a driver thinks they can get away with dr…

The Journey

Today was going to be a long day. Breakfast was at 7:15, and the groups assembled at 8:15 to start the tour. There was going to be a two and a half hour drive to HuangShan. We stopped off at the equivalent of a Motorway service station for a toilet break – no Western loos here, just holes in the ground. Along the way, we were driving through countryside, but there were still many towns and places of habitation. It is very noticeable how much new building is going on – especially of…
